Basics of Skin Care

By- Melinda Giletti

These days with modern science being what it is, it can sometimes feel like technology has a solution for everything - or at least it soon will have. This is also the case with our skin where there are a multitude of miracle skin care products which can take years off you, make your skin darker or lighter, more refined, even make you look thinner! Whilst many of these creams and lotions are all well and good, looking to miracle cures such as these can make us forget the fundamentals of looking after our skin.

Protect the Skin

So in this articles we will start off with the basics and move onto the potions that can make you look your best! The number one thing you must do for your skin to look its best is protect it. The main culprit for prematurely old looking skin is the sun. This does not mean that you need to stay out of the sun by any means - a little sun is good for the spirit and contains vital vitamin D. But UV light is bad for you, damaging the skin (as well as sometimes causing skin cancer). You should never let your skin get burnt, since this is a really brutal way to cause harm to your skin. The skin on your face is particularly delicate and this means the use of hats that protect your face from the sun is always a good idea. And do not to forget to protect your lips with a high factor lip screen.

Keep It Clean

Another fundamental point about good skin is keeping it clean. Exposure to pollution and the use of make up and products by both men and women can mean that pores become clogged. This does not mean that you should avoid make up but it does mean that proper cleaning is necessary. While traditional soap products are all right for some skins for use on both the face and body, others find these products too drying, especially for the delicate skin on the face. There are a number of cleansing products available that offer the right solution for your skin type (dry, sensitive, greasy etc.) so try a couple and see which one suits you best. You don't want to go bankrupt buying these everyday products, so you should try and find something that is a trade-off between good quality and value.

Hydrate the Skin

Another tip for maintaining healthy and youthful skin is to hydrate it. Keeping your skin moisturized is one of the key aspects of a good skin care regime. This is important all year round, but especially in the summer months. There are a multitude of seasonal good quality products on offer which don't need to cost a fortune.

At the end of our tour of the basics comes the exfoliant. The exfoliation stage should be done when your skin is not going to get irritated, when it is well moisturized. Summer exfoliation needs to be treated with care because our skin is often more irritable in hot weather. The key is matching the exfoliator you choose with your skin type. You must find a gentle exfoliant if you have skin that demands sensitive products. Also be careful to check if the product you elect is meant for use each day or less often. At the end of the day you need to learn to pay close attention to your skin so you will be able to discover what potions and lotions will be the very best for you.
