Ayurvedic View on Gestational Diabetes
In Ayurveda Madhumeha disease can be correlated with Diabetes Mellitus . Though there is no direct reference of Gestational Diabetes but Garbha Vriddhi is described as a complication .This Garbha Vriddhi can be understood as Overweight fetus or Macrosomia. In Garbha Vriddhi labour is difficult.
Ayurvedic Management Of Gestational Diabetes:
Ayurveda helps in limiting the maternal and fetal complications . Herbs are helpful as a supportive treatment along with the modern medicine under supervision.
Ayurvedic Diet in Gestational Diabetes :
Following food items can be included in the diet ( in moderation ) :Vegetables : Bitter gourd , fenugreek leaves , tomatoes , bell pepper , spinach , cucumber , radish , sponge gourd , drumstick leaves & fruits , broccoli , kale , lettuce , cauliflower , cabbage .
Pulses : Mainly beans – green gram , bengal gram , black eyed pea , garbanzo beans , chick pea .
Spices : Turmeric , cinnamon , garlic , fenugreek seeds .
Cereals : Wheat , barley , pearl millet , oats .
Fruits : Plums , kiwi , lime , oranges , guava , java plum / black plum , apple, peaches , gooseberry .
Dry Fruits : Almond , apricot , walnut .
Useful Ayurvedic Herbs :
1] Jambhul (Eugenia jambolana)Powder from jamun core is useful.
2] Gurmar(gymnema sylvestre).
3] Bitter Gourd/bitter melon (Momordica charantia)
4] Bel (Aegle marmelos).
5] Guduchi(Tinospora cordifolia)
6] Turmeric
7] Neem.
8] Triphala
9] Shilajit
10]Ashwagandha(Withania somnifera)
These herbs can be used under supervision .
Pranayam and Yogasana is beneficial .
