Ayurveda For Kidneys Health

Normally we don’t pay much attention to our kidneys until something goes wrong, but our kidneys play a critical role in keeping our bodies healthy. Our body is made up of two-thirds water and it’s the job of kidneys to maintain our hydration level,to flush out toxins by filtering blood, and produce three hormones: one to keep blood pressure in check, one to stimulate red blood cells, and one to maintain strong bones. A combination of diet, herbs and good practices like Yoga will keep them going strong.

Stay hydrated: drink at least 10 glasses of water a day, otherwise your urine will become concentrated, which harms your kidneys. The kidneys detoxify the body by filtering the blood and secreting the wastes through the urine.

Eat kidney-friendly Diet:

The kidneys excrete wastes but they can't always eliminate all toxins. Supplement your diet with calcium-rich ragi and eat lots of fruit and lemon when you're consuming an excess of protein. A protein-rich diet is acidic, and in trying to maintain your body's pH balance, the kidneys use calcium from your bones. Opt for a low-protein diet and mind your blood sugar and insulin levels. Also anything that causes high blood pressure—like a high sodium diet isn't good for the kidneys.

Drink freshly squeezed lime juice diluted with water first thing in the morning. Other kidney-friendly fruit, vegetable and herb juices include apple, orange, sweetlime, grape, carrot, beetroot, wheatgrass and parsley.Parsley is a natural diuretic that is particularly effective when taken as a tea. Simply bring to a boil 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley in 2 cups of water and steep for 15 minutes. Strain the parsley and drink the tea.

Use sprouted kidney beans, turmeric and garlic as ingredients when you make soup.

Eat pomegranates, watermelon and papaya. Cranberries or cranberry juice is a popular remedy for kidney problems.

Avoid excess tea, coffee, alcohol and tobacco as they are flushed out by the kidneys and expose them to a high level of acid.

Herbs useful in Kidney Diseases:

Gokshura, an ayurvedic herbal preparation, is prescribed for frequent kidney infections and problems caused by kidney stones. 'Chandraprabha-vati' is prescribed for those with recurrent kidney problems.

Obey your natural urges:
Ayurveda has described 13 non suppressible urges and Mutra vega (Urge of urine )is one of them.Urge of urine when controlled causes urinary calculi.

Minimize your use of pain relievers:
Using NSAIDS, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like Advil or Motrin or acetaminophens like Tylenol or Excedrin on a regular basis can damage your kidneys. Ideally, it’s best to avoid these drugs.Use Turmeric instead, which is one of the most effective natural pain relievers.

Kidney Diseases Yogic consideration:

The kidneys and urinary tract are governed by the third chakra—the manipura—located at the navel region. Glowing good health, courage, enthusiasm, vitality, and self-esteem are hallmarks of strong kidneys and a balanced navel chakra.

Put Your Kidneys in a Twist:Twists like janu shirshasana (head to knee pose) help keep your kidneys healthy by using what B.K.S. Iyengar calls a "squeezing and soaking" action. When we twist, we wring out the kidneys, getting rid of all the stale, toxic blood; as we release the pose, a fresh supply of oxygenated blood floods the area.

Kapalabhati breathing, with its forced exhales and passive inhales, stimulates the kidneys through the pulsating movement of the navel.
